How To Choose The Best Concealer For You

Concealer is designed to provide extra coverage where foundation or base products cannot, but with so many types of concealers on the market, it can be overwhelming trying to choose the right one.

Here’s a little guide to the different types and some tips to try to help you choose which one may be for you.

Colour Correctors

First up, let’s take a look at Colour Correctors. These are a type of concealer designed to help combat discolouration on the skin. Colour Correctors can be used to camouflage dark circles, pigmentation, redness and discolouration.  Colour Correctors come in many different colours from red to green to lavender, the list goes on, and as those colours are not exactly tones we want to show on the skin, it’s important to know that a Colour Corrector always needs to be layered under a foundation or a concealer.

Colour Corrector

Depending on your skin tone, pink, peach, orange and red tones are the perfect shades to brighten and conceal darkness making them ideal for under-eye dark circles. At Sculpted By Aimee, we designed those 4 colour corrector shades for exactly that reason. Our Brighten Up Colour Correctors soften the appearance of imperfections, fine lines and pigmentation in an instant and are enriched with Niacinamide, an ingredient used to lighten dark circles and discolouration and Hyaluronic Acid to keep the skin hydrated and fresh.

Top Tips for Applying Colour Correctors

Apply to the inner corner of the eye, where discolouration is most prominent, to create the perfect camouflage. Apply with your fingers for a seamless finish as the warmth from your hands will melt the product into the skin. Finish with an under-eye concealer closer to your natural skin tone.

Liquid Concealers

A liquid concealer is usually lightweight in consistency with a hydrating formula, making them the ideal concealer to use under the eyes. The moisture-rich ingredients present in many liquid concealers offer a radiant appearance which leaves a flattering finish for all skin types, especially those prone to dryness or creasing under the eyes. Liquid concealers can provide high coverage without looking cakey or feeling heavy on the skin, they give a smooth and natural finish for all ages.

We have two liquid concealers to choose from, Brighten Up Under Eye Concealer, which leaves a medium coverage dewy set finish on the skin, and Satin Silk Concealer, which provides higher coverage and a satin finish. We get that might be a little confusing, so let us break it down for you.

Brighten Up Concealer

Brighten Up Concealer is a soft-focus concealer that blurs and brightens while boosting skin health. It’s perfect for all ages and all skin types and conceals discolouration and signs of fatigue under the eyes. It is a non-comedogenic mineral formula that provides essential antioxidant protection packed with hyaluronic acid and niacinamide to keep the skin hydrated and stimulate collagen production. What makes this formula stand out from the rest is its next-generation pearlescent microparticles that catch the light for a naturally brightened finish. Choose this one if you have dry or mature skin, or if you prefer a lightweight coverage under the eyes. Available in 16 shades.

Satin Silk Liquid Concealer is a noticeably more high-coverage concealer. It camouflages dark circles, blemishes and pigmentation without caking on the skin due to its hydrating ingredients like Hyaluronic Acid and Vitamin E. The Satin Silk formula glides onto the skin effortlessly and stays put thanks to its durable, sweat-resistant pigments. It has a flattened doe wand tip for a super precise application and is the perfect concealer for sculpting the face and adding more coverage where needed. Choose this one if you like a higher coverage or have normal to oily skin. Available in 16 shades.

Top Tips for Applying Liquid Concealer

Apply a small amount to the inner corner of the eye using the wand or a brush, this is where the most discolouration is usually present. Apply a small amount also to the outer corner of the eye, this will add a ‘lifted’ effect and an overall brightness to the eye area. Blend using your fingers or a brush and try to avoid layering too much product to this delicate area. You can also use your liquid concealer to brighten or sculpt the face, or to add additional coverage where needed.

Cream Concealers

A cream concealer usually tends to be the most full coverage of the concealer types. They typically come in a compact pot or a cream stick formula and have a thicker cream consistency. A cream concealer can be identified as a camouflage cream and is designed for use over imperfections such as blemishes, redness, broken capillaries, scarring or pigmentation on the skin.  They can of course still be used under the eyes but as they have that thicker consistency, there is more risk of the concealer sitting into any fine lines in that delicate area. Cream Concealers are better used in specific areas that need higher coverage or camouflaging, rather than all over the skin.

Complete Cover Up Concealer is a mineral, high-coverage cream concealer. It is an oil-free, cream-to-powder concealer that provides a soft-matte finish to the skin. This is the ideal concealer for acne-prone or oily skin as it is non-comedogenic and oil-free, yet it still contains super hydrators hyaluronic acid, kokum butter and coconut extract, to keep the skin from drying out whilst wearing a fuller coverage. It’s best to match this one directly with your foundation shade for an even and seamless blend.

Top Tips for Applying a Cream Concealer

Use your fingers or a flat brush to pack the concealer onto the area that requires additional coverage. Using this type of concealer with a more targeted approach allows the skin to benefit from high coverage without looking cakey.

How to Choose a Concealer Shade

When choosing a colour corrector concealer shade, it’s important to note what tones you are trying to conceal on the skin, you can read more about our Colour Corrector shades HERE

For a liquid concealer used under the eyes, it’s an idea to go 1-2 shades lighter than your foundation, as this will help to brighten the under eyes whilst adding coverage. You can still choose one to match your foundation and that works too, however, to add some dimension to the face, choosing one or two shades lighter can be more flattering. Just try not to go ‘too bright’ as this can give an unnatural finish.

With a cream concealer, it’s best to match your foundation shade as the idea behind this concealer is to camouflage, meaning you’ll want it to blend right in with the rest of your skin.

Our Most Asked Concealer Question is.. “How do I stop my concealer from creasing under my eyes?"

We recommend that less is always more! Avoid bringing any foundation around the eye area as the more product layered in that area, the more prone to creasing you can be. Instead, leave that area foundation free and ready for concealer. Build up your concealer slowly rather than lashing layers of it on, starting by applying a dot on the inner corner of your eye, one in the centre under your eye and then a dot on the outer corner. This should be plenty and when blended, give you all the coverage you need. After blending and before any natural creases creep in, use a light powder to set it all in place. We love Velvet Veil translucent powder, pressed into the skin rather than swept on, as it is lightweight and hydrating yet provides a smooth flawless finish.
